Why should I learn to sing?

There are thousands of professional people out there who are successful business owners, doctors, nurses, lawyers, airline pilots, factory workers…you name it! There are also many college, high school and elementary students out there. If you were to ask them all: What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? The number one answer would probably be Music! And most of them, even those that believe they can’t “sing their way out of a paper bag”, have probably even found themselves singing a song before. Our voices are awesome and can be used for so many things; like singing with our friends and family, singing on a stage to perfect strangers who simply love music, singing together in church (along with the lady sitting behind you who has a really loud voice!) or simply singing in the shower to an audience of one!

Why take singing lessons?

Learning a new skill, like how to sing, is not that difficult. And some have succeeded at teaching themselves how to sing. However, the majority of people will benefit from getting one-on-one training from and being accountable to a professional vocal instructor or coach. Whether you want to become skilled enough to simply sing for your own enjoyment, or to even become good enough to become a professional someday, a vocal instructor can help you avoid developing bad habits. In fact, what you could learn in several years on your own, could be learned in half the time with an excellent teacher!

What if I’ve never sung before?

No problem! Getting started as a complete beginner, look at what you’ll learn! How to sing simple scale patterns, how to warmup your voice, exercises to strengthen all the muscles related to singing, the importance of pitch (singing the notes right!), how to sing along with a guitar or piano, and how to sing your favorite songs.

What if I already know how to sing a little bit?

No problem! Getting beyond the basics of scales and pitch, move on and begin learning how to sing along with pre-recorded (karaoke) music tracks, how to perform on stage in front of people, learning about different singing styles, adding emotion, how to sing in a recording studio, even how to create your own CD!

Wow, that’s a lotta stuff. Can I really do this?

Absolutely! If you dedicate yourself to giving it a chance, and train and practice smart, you can learn just a few singing scales, sing lots of songs, and impress after only a few months. It is totally up to you.

When can we do lessons?

Currently, I’m accepting new students on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. For exact time slots available, please call me at 214-289-2700.

How long are the lessons?

For my vocal students, we do 1 hour lessons. I have found that 1 hour lessons are very effective for beginners and even experienced singers. Plus, I have a tendency to teach in an efficient manner, so we can get a lot done in an hour lesson.

How much does it cost?

Lessons are $50 for a 1 hour session. The majority of my vocal students do a minimum of (2) 1 hour sessions per month (every other week). However, I do have several more experienced or professional students who desire to move faster so they do (4) 1 hour sessions per month (weekly).

How long before I can actually perform and sing music in front of people?

I firmly believe that any student must first learn the fundamentals required to become a successful singer. Improper training, where fundamentals are not stressed can lead to shortcomings that can interfere with the emotional content of the performance. Ultimately, the emotion in a performance is the most important aspect, to both you and your audience. This means that it is very important to take care of the basics of singing and master them as best you can. Then, and only then, will you be able to focus on delivering emotion in your performance.
