 Why play the guitar?

There are thousands of professional people out there who are successful business owners, doctors, nurses, lawyers, airline pilots, factory workers, college, high school and elementary students…you name it! If you were to ask them all, what they’d really like to do with their free time, the number one answer would be to play music. The guitar is a powerful instrument that can be used for so many things, from writing songs to simply playing music with your friends and family, or even relieving stress.

Why take lessons?

Learning a new skill, like playing the guitar, is not that difficult. And some have succeeded at teaching themselves how to play. However, the majority of people will benefit from getting one-on-one training from and being accountable to a professional guitar teacher. Whether you want to become skilled enough to be a professional, or just planning to play for your own enjoyment, a guitar teacher can help you avoid developing bad habits. In fact, what you could learn in ten years on your own, could be learned in one year with an excellent teacher!

What if I’ve never played?

No problem! Getting started as a complete beginner, look at what you’ll learn! Chords, accompaniment techniques, basic music theory, building chords, single notes, scales & melodies; guitar theory: including parts of the guitar, how to tune, how to change strings, proper technique, notes on the fret board and staff, chord progressions, strumming and finger picking patterns, ear training; note reading, memorization and learning tactics; songs to sing and play using the First Position (musical pieces that are played primarily using the first four frets).

What if I already know how to play a little bit?

No problem! Getting beyond the basics, and after mastering the first position, move on and begin using the entire fret board to play more advanced chords, scales and melodies, including rhythm, barre chords and moveable chords, right-hand accompaniment patterns, bass lines and fills, and note reading.

Wow, that’s a lotta stuff. Can I really do this?

Absolutely! If you dedicate yourself to giving it a chance, and train and practice smart, you can learn just a few chords, play lots of songs, and impress after only a few months. It is totally up to you.

When can we do lessons?

Currently, I’m accepting new students on Tuesdays and Fridays, in Keller. I also teach at another location on Mondays, in Argyle (at CateLee Recording Studio). For exact time slots available, please call me at 214-289-2700.

How long are the lessons?

I do both ½ hour and 1 hour lessons. I have found that ½ hour lessons are very effective for beginners and particularly younger students and I have a tendency to teach in an efficient manner, so we can get a lot done in that time span. However, some students do better with a 1 hour lesson (particularly those who are seeking vocal training in addition to guitar).

How much does it cost?

Lessons are $25 for ½ hour session, and $50 for 1 hour session.

How long before I can actually perform with my guitar and/or sing music in front of people?

I firmly believe that any student must first learn the fundamentals required to become a successful guitarist and/or singer. Improper training, where fundamentals are not stressed can lead to shortcomings that can interfere with the emotional content of the performance. Ultimately, the emotion in a performance is the most important aspect, to both you and your audience. This means that it is very important to take care of the basics of the guitar and master them as best you can. Then, and only then, will you be able to focus on delivering emotion in your performance.
